A new incarnation
Dark Covenant’s second incarnation saw the light in the summer of 2009 by long time musical associates Evillair (Nordic Winter/Strigoï Mort/ Graven Dusk) and Vjohrrnt Wodansson (Fjörd). Yet the initial ideas of the music were sketched out back in 1993/early 94 under the name of Dawn of Sorrow. It was then that the two musicians initially put to paper and into recording, the first rough samples of their own version of classic Doom Metal inspired by such legends as Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Memento Mori and Mercy. But fate weaved a destiny other that the immediate realisation of their musical project. It was only some 16 years later, after each followed his own musical path, that both artists reunited again under the proper forces of fate, and brought back to life their long time passion: Epic Doom Metal. In the fall of 2009, Somatophylax and JS (Fjörd) joined the covenant on bass and rhythm guitar respectively. Both musicians were in fact the initial line-up of Wodansson’s first band in 89. Thus the formation was re-named Dark Covenant. The pact was sealed.
An echo forlorn
Following the melodic path of classically inspired doom metal instead of the newest “death/funeral/minimalistic” genre, Dark Covenant desired to build the foundation of their music upon ultra-heavy atmospheres laden with pounding percussions and bass lines. Evil Lair’s endless well of creativity resonates through is dirge-like hymns. Combining to perfection both melodic simplicity with technical prowess, yet thundering with powerful epic grandeur, he his able to conjure up from the depths of his soul the true essence of Doom-Metal. Keeping in balance contemporary originality and traditional legacy, for a result that is unique and familiar in the genre. Supporting Lair’s sound-wall of woe is Wodansson’s thundering voice evoking from darkened realms unseen a sorrowful yet powerful accompaniment to the solemn manifestation.
Quintessence
The lyrical concept of Dark Covenant revolves around the classic doom metal themes of ancient mythologies, the esoteric, otherworldly realms as well as anti-modernist views. Considering themselves more as artists rather than musicians, Lair and Wodansson take very seriously every aspect of their project: from composition to song writing, recording and mastering to imagery and graphics as well as self-management and promotion. Everything must have its purpose and be in its proper place as all these comprise the soul of the entity that is Dark Covenant. Thus both artists seek to create by themselves as much as their mutual combined talents permit.
